HTC One E8 versus M8: What’s the difference?
7/21/2014 1:03:04 PM

The HTC One E8 is upon us, and we’ve got our hands on the lighter, polycarbonate version of HTC’s flagship targeted at Russia, India and parts of Asia. As we’ve pointed out in our coverage so far, the E8 is essentially the internals of the HTC One M8 in a plastic case with a different camera. But beyond that there are actually quite a few smaller differences to get to grips with. For instance, only one has an IR blaster, and there are some LED flash differences too.

Check the table below for the full E8 vs M8 breakdown.

Samsung says that overheating not to blame for warped Galaxy Tab S back covers
7/21/2014 12:46:33 PM

A number of Samsung Galaxy Tab S users have been reporting that the backs of their devices were becoming deformed, which is apparently due to defective back covers. While it was initially speculated that the deformation was the result of overheating, this appears now that this is not case. Samsung has apparently already solved the problem, which affected a limited number of devices. A Samsung spokesperson had this to say:

Yahoo Mail review
7/21/2014 12:40:47 PM

This week we’re going to be taking a deep dive into some of Yahoo’s Android apps. Sure, Google trounced them in search in the early days, but Yahoo has managed to stick through it with a couple of bruises.

As it turns out, Yahoo has some pretty great apps. First and foremost, Yahoo Mail delivers some extremely sharp visuals thanks in no small part to the strong theme support. While looking through the inbox and other e-mail views, the background is blurred out, but as soon as you pop into a menu, you get a striking wallpaper and assigns a complementary highlight color through the rest of the interface. A similar set-up is available on the web, but unfortunately the two don’t sync. Besides that, the icon set is flat and minimal, just the way we like it, and transition animations are smooth.

7/21/2014 12:00:52 PM

If you’re looking for a sweet deal with regards to using data abroad on this year’s holiday, O2 may well have the right bundle price at just £2 a day. We’ve all been in that situation, looking at pricing and being stunned by just how expensive roaming can be, even when travelling within the EU. UK mobile operators are attempting to tackle the issue of high charges (as is the EU, which hopes to have said charges abolished by 2015).

Android is the favorite platform of app developers
7/21/2014 11:33:29 AM

It’s not easy to make it as an app developer. That’s the key takeaway from the latest State of the Developer Nation report from Vision Mobile, pulling together data from more than 10,000 mobile developers (including some of you) across 137 countries. With that many developers they were able to get a broad view of what’s popular and (more importantly) what’s successful in making great apps.

How to set a sleep timer in Sonos
7/21/2014 10:53:15 AM

If you’ve got anything at all from Sonos — be it the smaller Play 1 speaker, or the room-filling Play 5, or perhaps a Soundbar — you’re going to want to use it as much as you can. For one, Sonos is excellent. It sounds great and is one of the easiest ways to stream music wirelessly through your home. But it’s also not inexpensive, and so I’m making a point of using it whenever I can.

When I was a kid I’d fall asleep listening to the old-school CNN Headline News on AM radio. (And that says more than a few things about me.) CNN has changed more than a bit since then. But then again so have I. And I’m now making it a point to put on something relaxing as I’m passing out.

To that end, there’s a sleep timer available in the Sonos app, but it’s a wee bit buried. Here’s where to find it.

Android Central University: QR Codes for fun and profit
7/21/2014 9:39:03 AM

Our planet is covered in tiny squares filled with a curious arrangement of shapes that mean absolutely nothing to the naked eye. They are on posters, billboards, business cards, cereal boxes, and so much more. For the most part we ignore them, because there’s no reason to interact with these little squares unless specifically told to. They are called QR Codes, and once you figure out how to fit them into your life they can become an incredibly useful tool.

QR Codes are not a new technology, in fact they have been around since 1994 and were originally used to track components during vehicle assembly. Today you can find tiny QR Codes on components for tons of different things, as many companies still use this tracking method during assembly. For those of us who aren’t building a car, these little squares are used mostly for presenting links to websites and apps in a way that doesn’t require manual input.
