Walmart CEO has a problem with Amazon’s ‘Prime Day’ sale, and that’s good news for shoppers

Amazon Logo Shutterstock

To celebrate its 20th birthday, Amazon is hosting a gigantic ‘Prime Day’ sale on Wednesday, July 15th that will offer Prime customers Black Friday-like savings for just 24 hours. While this may be an enticing promotion for current Prime customers, folks who don’t subscribe to Amazon’s premium shopping service will need to pay a $99 fee in order to become a member and take advantage of the savings.

If you’re not interested in the Prime Day sale or aren’t a member of the shopping service, that’s okay, because there might be another way to save big on some quality electronics over the next week or so. President and CEO of Walmart.com Fernando Madeira voiced his opinion earlier this morning regarding Amazon’s sale, claiming that there is “no rhyme or reason for paying a premium to save.” The opinionated blog post didn’t call out Amazon specifically, but it’s clear that Madeira was taking a clear shot at the online retailer.

From the blog post:

If you’ve shopped Walmart.com, you’ll know that every day is a special day where everyone has access to the same low prices we offer.  We mean everyone: you, your neighbor, your boss, your best friend … all of whom are looking for the best price on the things they want and need. We’ve heard some retailers are charging $100 to get access to a sale. But the idea of asking customers to pay extra in order to save money just doesn’t add up for us.

This bickering isn’t just fun to watch unfold, it’s also great news if you’re looking to score some great deals over the next few days. Beginning this week, Walmart customers will see thousands of discounts throughout the site along with “some special atomic deals.” The company is also decreasing its free shipping threshold on its website from $50 to $35, which is the same as the free shipping rate for Amazon’s non-Prime customers.

We don’t have a ton of details concerning Walmart’s sale, so we’re not entirely sure how long shoppers will be able to save. We’ll let you know when more details roll in.

Remember, Prime Day begins this Wednesday, and Walmart’s savings are going on right now. If you’re interested in checking out the retailer’s Dare to Compare promotion, head to this link for more information.

Seidio DILEX Pro kickstand case for LG G4

It’s not the most rugged case available, but the Seidio DILEX Pro can certainly take a beating if and when it needs to.

What was once called the ACTIVE Case, the DILEX Pro has come a long way in design since it was first introduced. Seidio’s refined both layers and managed to make a fairly slim cover that has many users coming back as they upgrade their devices. We took this hybrid kickstand case for a spin with the LG G4, getting a closer look at its build quality.

Eboe review: Simplicity at its simplest

Eboe is an extremely simple yet extremely hard game. You are placed in a circle and have to move clockwise or anti-clockwise to avoid balls being shot from a cannon. That’s it. It is as boring as it sounds. Do be warned though: It is extremely hard.

Setup

Just like the gameplay, the developer Medbe has taken the “simplistic” approach. The main screen is adorned by your highscore, the “Play” button and a volume on/off button. There is no settings button as, well, the game just doesn’t require it. You can link it to your Google Play Games which is a nice bonus. I was confused when I started playing as there was no tutorial. Yes, although it’s simple it will take a few tries to adjust to what you’re supposed to do.

Adverts are a pain but fortunately there were few pop-ups as compared to the banner ads.

Gameplay

Like I previously stated, you are placed in a circle and have to move clockwise or anti-clockwise to avoid balls being shot from a cannon. The cannon is always directly opposite you so it cannot provide shelter for you. Usually when I review an app, I’ll spend up to 2 hours on it. However I got so bored after 10 minutes of playing that I decided to wrap it up. There were also no missions, story modes or challenges to justify the boring, repetitive gameplay.  It states “There is not much things to say about Eboe” in the Play Store description, and they certainly weren’t lying. Perhaps the only challenge is beating your high score, which is determined by how many seconds you can stay alive.

Simple is not necessarily the best
The balls bounce around the circle
It seems impossible when they start collecting up (There is no man as he just died)

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Is it for you?

If you’re that person who wants a quick play with an extreme challenge, check it out. Otherwise, it’s certainly not gonna tickle your fancy in hardcore gaming.

What we liked

  • The simplicity (to an extent)
  • Suitable for a quick game
  • It’s hard

What we didn’t like

  • No challenges/missions
  • Repetitive gameplay
  • Too boring

To put it bluntly, it’s probably not worth your time downloading it. It’s like eating the same food for dinner every night. The game mechanics and replay value simply do not hold much against other games you could be playing.

Geeksphone calls it quits, Spanish manufacturer out of smartphone biz

After six years and six separate smartphone models, Geeksphone has announced that it is getting out of the smartphone business. The Spanish smartphone manufacturer is one of the few Europe-based mobile makers – jumping into the business as a startup that built handsets for an active enthusiast community (hence the name). But all of that has come to an end.

The official announcement was made in its user forum (check the source link below) and that is where the manufacturer offered its reasons for calling it quits. It said that the mobile business has moved forward to a point where serving a niche geek community is no longer viable for the company. In no small words, the company is just not earning enough to be viable. “The reality of the company today is very different from what it was in the beginning, since the concept of innovation based on a passionate geek community, talented and creative, has now much less sense and it is a differentiation, which currently generates little interest in the mobile environment in relation to the 2009 date of our creation,” the company said in the forum post.

geeksphone_revolution2

We know that the company created at least six handsets, and also looked into the Firefox OS for one of their phones. They even built a multi-OS phone, in the sense that the user could choose whether it wanted Android or Firefox as the device OS out of the box. They never hyped on sales, and so we can’t really be sure how many phones the company sold over the past 6 six years.

geeksphone_ffos

That said, the company declared that it will be making its code open source so that it can be used by the community. Geeksphone’s co-founder, Rodrigo Silva-Ramos, has moved on to other platforms, particularly the “geeks!me” wearables brand. Its first product is an activity tracker and will probably come out in the next few months.

Here Comes Motorola’s Next Line-Up of Phones All at the FCC

Last week, we told you about a new Motorola device that had stopped off at the FCC looking like the company’s next unlocked flagship phone. It featured a body bigger than the DROID Turbo, supported turbo charging, 802.11ac MiMo WiFi, LTE Advanced, and almost all of the US LTE bands outside of Verizon’s. We speculated that it is the rumored 5.5-inch QHD device currently hiding under codename “Kinzie.”

This morning, after looking through a couple of other recent Motorola FCC filings that could be new Moto G, E, or DROID line variants, we’re pretty sure we found the Verizon equivalent to the phone above. Well, it may be even better than that.

Let’s talk briefly about them all.

Motorola “Kinzie” for all carriers (FCC ID IHDT56UC1)

The phone we covered last week fell under FCC ID  IHDT56UC2, so it would make sense that an identical phone could be UC1, which we are seeing here. This phone sports the same exact dimensions, LTE-A, MiMo WiFi, and turbo charging, but differs in that it also includes support for Verizon. What makes this phone really interesting, though, is the fact that it also seems to be ready for every single other US network, along with Verizon.

The “UC2″ we saw last week lacked Verizon, but this phone is ready for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. That’s shocking because we tend to see phones with support for Verizon’s network lack bands for those from other carriers. The only Motorola device I can think of that currently works everywhere, is the Nexus 6.

I don’t know exactly what this phone is, but it sounds like this year’s flagship from Motorola, one that is fully unlocked and ready for whichever carrier you like.

Moto G (3rd Gen) or new DROID? (FCC ID IHDT56UB1)

Dropping things down a notch, we also stumbled upon a phone that could either be a new Moto G (3rd gen) or new DROID Mini-like device on its way to Verizon. I say that because this phone must be a mid-ranger. It has all of the band support it needs for Verizon, but it doesn’t have 802.11ac WiFi, which almost all flagship phones have these days. It has a removable back, as well, which is a common feature for the Moto G and Moto E series, since Motorola likes to offer up some customization on those through interchangeable backs. The “UB1″ was not tested with a Turbo Charger. This phone is also smaller than the phone above, but is close to the Turbo in size, which could drop it in around the 5.2-inch range.

I’m guessing it could be some new DROID model, because it seems to big to be the new Moto G, which I’ll get to in a second. I’m not sure why Motorola and Verizon would team up for a mid-range DROID phone, unless again, it’s marketed like the DROID Mini was.

Moto G (3rd Gen) for Sprint? (FCC ID IHDT56QG6)

Finally, a similar phone to the mid-ranger above appears to be headed to Sprint. This phone is smaller than both of those mentioned above and lacks 802.11ac WiFi, but does have a removable back. My guess is that this is most definitely the new Moto G (3rd gen). It’s dimensions match up almost identically to last year’s model.
