Comcast today announced Stream, a new streaming service they’re rolling out for customers of their Xfinity internet. The big deal here is that internet-only customers can pay just $15 per month — with no added equipment, mind you — to stream content from about a dozen of Comcast’s networks.
Said networks include major broadcast channels such as NBC, Fox, CBS, The CW, Telemundo and Univision, and even some premium channels like HBO. Unfortunately Comcast didn’t see fit to share a full list just yet, but they boast that the amount of shows and movies you’ll have access to reaches the “thousands” mark (with much of that content coming through Streampix, Comcast’s Netflix-like streaming service).
There is one catch, though — the live TV service is only intended for use in the home, so you’ll only be able to use it if you’re connected to your Comcast-fueled network. That said, you do have the freedom to watch it on smartphones, tablets and smart TV apps, so there is a bit of freedom in how you access the content. You’ll also be able to watch any of the content you record through the company’s cloud-driven DVR service on the go, so there’s some wiggle room there, as well.
This may not be the cord cutter’s ultimate dream, but it’s a step in the right direction and we’re hoping Comcast has plans to flesh this thing out and take content delivery to the next level. The service will trial in Boston by the end of summer, with Chicago and Seattle planned by year’s end. Comcast expects it to spread nationwide beyond that if all goes well.
