Managed intents could be Google’s key to the enterprise market

Control over how sensitive files are shared could be big for Google’s place in a BYOD world

Earlier we got a little more information about the new enterprise features coming with Android L, courtesy of Samsung’s contribution of portions of Knox. As consumers, it’s not really the sort of thing we think about, at least not very often. But one of the bullet points really stood out to me, and I think it could be just the thing Google needs to build out their own piece of enterprise market share — managed intents.

Read on to see why I think this is Google’s foot in the door of the enterprise.

Samsung says Galaxy S5 will relieve iPhone owners of ‘screen envy’
7/21/2014 3:09:49 PM

Samsung is teasing iPhone owners and their small screens by saying, in usual Samsung marketing lingo, that the next big thing is already here. Highlighting the 5.1-inch display of the Galaxy S5, Samsung is telling you that iPhone owners don’t need to wait for the much rumored iPhone 6 that our friends at iMore are anxiously awaiting to get a better display.

Facebook’s new save feature lets you get to that quiz later
7/21/2014 1:35:47 PM

Facebook will soon let you save your favorite things from Facebook. Not a local save, mind you, more of a Pocket for Facebook, and only in Facebook. With the save feature a tap or two will let you save a link, place, or bit of linked media (movie, TV show, or music) for later reference. Those hilarious (or incriminating) status updates and photos? You still can’t save those — you’ll still have to resort to a screenshot for that.

Google gives a few details on the enterprise management tools coming in Android L
7/21/2014 1:19:23 PM

One of the less sexy but more important announcements at Google I/O last month was that Google is adopting part of Samsung’s enterprise (as in corporate) security system into the L release of Android. The short version is that it’ll be easier than ever to have your work data on your phone alongside your personal data, but the two will be secure and completely sandboxed. (You can get an early look at it now in the L Developer Preview, if you’re so inclined.)

Today, Google and Samsung have dropped a little more info on exactly what’s going on.
