New renders show what the 2015 Moto G might look like

moto g 2015 1

OnLeaks is at it again with another pre-release render of an upcoming smartphone. This time it’s the 2015 Moto G, and while the tipster warns us that the renders are made to specification for a case manufacturer (meaning it’s not an official retail render of the device), he suggests this does look close to the real deal.

So what are we getting a look at here? Not much that we haven’t already seen out of a Motorola smartphone in the past couple of years, including that signature dimple on the back. It has the company’s familiar shape and curves, albeit at a bit thicker form factor (which could just be the result of a rough reference render more than a design issue).

Other than that, it looks like a Moto G, and when it’s official it should also look very attractive to your wallet. Rumored specs include a 5-inch 720p display, Snapdragon 410 chipset, a 13 megapixel camera, 5 megapixel front camera, 8GB of internal storage w/ microSD and 1GB of RAM. Let’s hope it doesn’t take Motorola long to take the wraps off this thing.

Here are the cities where you’ll be able to demo the HTC Vive

We reported earlier this week that HTC was taking its Vive VR headset on a tour of U.S. cities, and now it looks like that’s set to turn into a world tour of sorts. The company has announced that it will be making stops 11 cities in the U.S. and Europe over the next few months, offering interested fans a chance to demo the Vive VR headset.

Barnes & Noble’s International Nook Store shutting down soon

Pundits saw it coming a mile away, so people were no longer surprised when Barnes & Noble told its European customers that they are essentially shutting down the international Nook ebookstore. Customers outside the US began receiving emails from B&N that they will no longer be able to pay through their Microsoft account and that they will no longer be able to access their content through the Nook app for Windows if they don’t live in the US.

This is just confirming what they announced last month that Barnes & Noble and Windows have severed their commercial ties and that the Nook Windows app will no longer be available for download outside the US. B&N actually bought out Microsoft’s share in the Nook in December of last year, and of course, that meant eventually, they would part ways. But as to what that would mean for B&N and their Nook ebookstore is still a mystery.

It’s not like Nook has been setting the digital world on fire. Their profits have fallen by half of the previous fiscal year and sales have been in a continuous decline. One reason for this is that their malfunctioning website (which was even re-launched but to no avail) resulted in loss of sales, according to some of the authors. So it’s either someone buys their database and customer accounts and relaunch it into something new, or they will eventually totally close shop and look into other products or businesses.

Previously, you could download the app in 40 countries, including Australia, Canada, most of Europe, and some Asian countries. But by August 7, 2015, the Nook app can only be downloaded in the US and UK. They assured customers in the email that they will be eligible for a refund if they used their Microsoft account to make purchases on the Nook.

Video: Android M Preview 2 Overview!

Yesterday, Google gave us an updated Android M Developer Preview 2 that had a good handful of tweaks and changes that we pointed out through a series of Android M feature posts. But since we realize that not everyone wants to read through each individual post, we went ahead and put together a quick video of each of the changes in action.

In the clip below, you’ll see the tweaked app drawer, new Storage and Memory areas in settings, fully-featured System UI Tuner (with status bar options!), and how you can quickly delete screenshots. None of this stuff is game-changing or even ground-breaking, but it certainly adds some polish to that original preview.

Should we find other little goodies, we will be sure to pass along that info.

Huawei and a Chinese Google Play store: Google needs a Chinese OEM just as much as a Chinese OEM needs Google

Huawei logo DSC08913

Google is said to be working on their next Nexus smartphone with Huawei. This is would be a great opportunity for Huawei as the Chinese company has seen great success globally, having the 4th largest vendor market share. However they’ve had minimal success here in the US. Huawei and other Chinese OEMs just aren’t household names here. Having Google’s official support would be great for Huawei brand recognition, showing the American public that Huawei is trustworthy and worth looking into. If a company such as Google can trust Huawei, then so can the consumer. This could set a trend that would bolster sales of other Huawei smartphones in the US in addition to the next Nexus.

With a population of over 1 billion, Google needs China’s consumers to continue their global domination. Apple and non-Google versions of Android are doing quite well in China and continuing to grow, without Google. Android phones with Google Mobile Services aren’t growing, because they can’t. Google services are blocked by The Great Firewall of China. Google needs a way to break into the Chinese market. Even Sundar Pichai himself showed interest last winter stating that “it would be a privilege to serve Chinese users” and that hopefully Google would have a chance to offer their services to Chinese users sometime in the future.

Last month, local Chinese media reported that Google was lobbying to push a new application store in China. Google was even said to have approached Chinese hardware manufacturers and offered them $1 per handset sold with the Google Play store and Google services.

If this report is to be believed, then it would seem that Google has already received the green light from Beijing to move forward. However, just because Google is allowed to punch through The Great Firewall of China doesn’t mean the road ahead would be an easy one. Google would need to convince OEMs to use a new set of services and applications that they’re not used to pre-installing inside China, currently relying on Chinese services from Google clones like Baidu and their own homegrown solutions. This is where the lobbying and the $1 incentive mentioned above comes into play.

Having one of China’s largest OEMs sell an Android phone with Google Mobile Services and the Google Play store would certainly be a win for Google in China and would set a precedent for other OEMs to follow suit if the move pans outs to be successful.

Huawei Watch DSC08906

We previously told you that the Huawei Watch was delayed until this September or October. Google generally launches Nexus phones in the fall. We could see the Huawei Watch launch alongside the Huawei Nexus simultaneously in China with the Google Play store. That wouldn’t be a bad way to introduce Google back into China, would it?

This week’s episode of Android Apps Weekly is brought to you by Tap n Flap. Yes, I know this is a Flappy Bird clone but this one is actually pretty decent. It comes with Google Play Games achievements and leaderboards and if you pay the reasonable $1.49 for the in-app purchase, you’ll have five levels to choose from, each with their own bird skin. Once you unlock all achievements, you can change birds and even obstacles to whatever you want. It’s a time waster, but a decent one and it’s kid friendly. Welcome back to Android Apps Weekly! Here are your headlines for this week:

  • MasterCard is working on a new app that will let you take selfies for payments by verifying the identify the user before processing a payment. This would be among the precious few instances where selfies were actually useful.
  • In an interesting twist, Shadowgun: Deadzone by Madfinger Games now has mods! The modding will allow people to change characters, weapons, levels, and even some of the game mechanics. All you have to do is download the Deadzone GM kit.
  • Sony and Twitch have teamed up together to allow broadcasting game play from Sony Xperia devices. Right now, it’s limited to only the most recent Xperia lineup including Z3+ and Z4 but this gives mobile gamers more ways to stream on Twitch.
  • Microsoft has rebranded their entertainment apps to lose the Xbox moniker. From now on, Xbox Music will be Groove while Xbox Video will be Movies & TV. This is likely in anticipation for the Windows 10 launch next month.
  • Telltale Games has released the first trailer for the highly anticipated Minecraft: Story Mode game. It definitely looks like a Minecraft game except this will have a story line. In classic Tellate Games fashion, this will be an episodic adventure. It should be pretty good.

Fleksy Android appsFleksy

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
The popular keyboard Fleksy made a huge announcement this last week. They have lowered the price of the app to free and it will now be supported with in-app purchases. Fleksy has a huge year in 2014 and it’s considered one of the best and most popular keyboards around. We anticipate it being free to use will help continue all of that. Along with going free, it will also soon be receiving an update that brings some new features.

action launcher best android appsAction Launcher

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Action Launcher got a fairly significant update this last week. A new feature called Quickbar was added that allows users to customize the search bar at the top. This allows fast access to applications along with a little more functionality. The update also included some minor tweaks and changes along with the boilerplate bug fixes and performance improvements. It’s a good launcher if you’re in the market for one.

android apps weeklyRamboat

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Ramboat is a surprisingly intense game that is kind of a parody of the Rambo series. This is a 2D, side scrolling shooter where you must race up and down rivers and mow down bad guys. The graphics aren’t amazing but they’re definitely not bad. It even includes a poker game mechanic. It’s definitely a time-waster type of game but let’s face it, there’s gambling and guns, what else do you need?

android apps weeklyTossup

[Price: Free]
Tossup is a new application out of Microsoft Garage and it’s a fun little app. What it does is help you plan events and gather opinions about things. Using the app, you can ask people if they plan on attending an event and get answers back quickly. You can also use it to find things like restaurants or even individual opinions about something. It’s a bit simple and there are some release day bugs, but it’s worth a shot.

Google teaming up with Huawei for the new Nexus

We’ve heard numerous times before that various manufactures are in on the new Nexus and one of the most likely has been Huawei. This time, a new report has surfaced that once again puts Huawei behind the hardware for the next Nexus smartphone.

This comes courtesy of ‘The Information‘, which has been reliable in the past when it comes to source leaks, who say that Google will be teaming up with Huawei in a partnership that will benefit both companies.

google-nexus-5-2015-concept-image-630x549

The next Nexus device is expected to be a 5.7-inch Quad HD device, powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor, and could be only one of two Nexus devices that possibly would be offered in different sizes.

The ‘benefit both companies’ piece revolves around bringing the Chinese manufacturer into the US market and this will inturn help Google bring their Google Play Store to China, a place where it hasn’t had much luck.

In addition to the Huawei-made Nexus 5.7-inch device, LG are also reportedly in talks with Google to bring a smaller 5-inch device, similar to the profile of the Nexus 5, both of which will be running Android M and will be launched in parallel of the new operating system.

OnePlus has (overly?) ambitious plans to be a platform that ‘follows us’

oneplus-one-unboxing-8-of-29

The OnePlus 2 is almost here, and to get us hyped up, Carl Pei spoke to The Guardian on what to expect from the company not just with its next handset, but in the years to come. The biggest goal for OnePlus? Turning its brand into a platform that keeps users coming back for more.

Android users tend to be less attached to one particular Android brand than say Apple fans (though that’s not always the case), often flitting between Samsung, HTC, Sony, and others. Instilling loyalty in your brand means adding extra value that makes your products stand out. So what exactly does OnePlus plan to do to set itself apart? In the interview, Pei shared several ideas — all of them pretty up in the clouds.

First, Pei talked about how its software could be used to help its fans do good for others. As an example, Pei said: “If there’s an earthquake, we can nudge them to donate money, or help in some other way, to get free credits on their OnePlus account. Or some other incentive.” An interesting idea, as long as its not overly invasive with its pestering.

Beyond this, Pei talked about how they are still taking things slowly but that when they get “15 million active users, that starts to get really, really interesting”. Building a base that size will open up new doors according to Pei. In addition to building new partnerships with companies like Dropbox and Uber to develop better incentives for its user base, Pei believes that in the future they can offer things like “OnePlus credits” and can make it possible for your information to follow you through a OnePlus account, making switching to a new phone an instantaneous process.

In Pei’s exact words, “because we own the end-to-end user experience on e-commerce, we can capture their address, their credit card information, even their biometric information.” Wait… What? That seems like a lot of power to give one company, though OnePlus says its plans would be to log users into their new devices before they even receive them. “So next time, with the OnePlus 4 or 5 a few years down the line, when they receive the phone it’s already logged in and already has everything set up according to their preferences, already has their biometric information. The entire friction of making a purchase or a customisation just decreases so much more. This will lead to higher engagement.”

While it’s unclear how much (or if at all) of this vision will affect the OnePlus 2, it seems that Pei’s ambitions for OnePlus go beyond just making hardware. At least if he has his wish, in the future OnePlus could be a platform that (hopefully) safely stores all your personal details, all the information about your favorite apps, preferences, and more. The problem is, OnePlus hasn’t exactly had a great reputation when it comes to customer service. Could they be trusted with this level of power over a user’s personal data? Would they be able to logistically handle it without it turning into a PR nightmare? Only time will tell for sure.

Probably the most intriguing (Read: scary) aspect of it is that Pei mentioned twice the idea of OnePlus remotely storing biometric data. Is this a hint that the OnePlus 2 will not be storing fingerprint information on-device, as we’ve seen from companies like Samsung? What do you think of OnePlus’ bold ambitions, could they actually pull them off or is it a disaster waiting to happen? Let us know what you think in the comments.
