Reported Android Wear Update to Bring Interactive Watch Faces, Watch-to-Watch Communication

As reported by Phandroid, an update is coming to Android Wear, bringing with it a couple of highly notable features. First, a basic change in the UI will allow users to perform a single tap on the device’s display, resulting in windows sliding in from the right.

For example, inside of an app, a tap could bring up new dialog for users to consume, such as health info via Google Fit. On the home screen, certain watch faces that are not yet released would allow for interaction. If a watch face shows weather, you could tap on it, then it will display different time zones, battery info, or other information.

More interestingly, this reported update would also bring a new watch-to-watch communication method. As you may be aware, the Apple Watch allows users to send doodles and heartbeats to one another, increasing, in a rather odd way, interaction between smartwatch owners. The update for Android Wear will also bring the ability to share doodles and messages to fellow Android Wear users, just like on the Apple Watch. Beyond just doodles, we could see sharable Stickers, Emoji, and Photos.

The below images were posted alongside the report from Phandroid, detailing what users can expect from the upcoming update. Currently, there is no timeframe for when we can expect this change.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 visits TENAA, coming very soon sans fingerprint scanner

Last week, we learned that Xiaomi is one of the biggest names in the fake Android market. That’s not really something to be proud of but we know Xiaomi is determined to be bigger not only in China but in other countries as well albeit not in the US anytime soon. The MIUI 6 ROM for the Redmi 1S was recently made available globally and the brand has also launched in Brazil the entry level Redmi 2 Android phone.

Xiaomi is set to make an important announcement this coming July 16 and we’ve been hearing several rumors that it could be the Xiaomi Mi 5 together with the Mi 5 Plus and the Redmi Note 2. Anything is possible especially after a TENAA certification was recently sighted. The phone looks a lot like the first-gen Redmi Note except for what is believed to be a loudspeaker found at the back. We can’t see any fingerprint sensor though as previously rumored.

All the details and the images point to a possible Redmi Note successor. Actually, two versions were spotted and both will have 2GB RAM, either a Snapdragon 615 or an octa-core MediaTek MT679 processor, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing cam, 16GB or 32GB built-in storage, and a 3020mAh battery.

There’s another rumor that the two variants of the Redmi Note 2 will differ on the material used for the body–one is plastic and the other one metal but it’s too early to say yet so let’s wait and see as it the announcement is only a few days from today.

Deal: Refurbished Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch for just $120 after coupon code

Samsung-Gear-2-20

Android Wear, Apple Watch and Pebble all seem to be the big players in the smartwatch space lately, though there is one other notable option that we tend to forget about when it comes to choosing our next smartphone companion. Samsung’s Tizen-powered Gear 2, which was unveiled early 2014, is still a decent option for those looking for an inexpensive, capable smartwatch. Normally the watch’s price point is too high for us to recommend, but right now there’s a decent promotion going on that may be worth your while.

For a limited time, or while supplies last, you can pick up a refurbished Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch from A4C for just $119.95. The list price reads $169.95, but it will drop down to the sale price once you apply coupon code CHEAP50 at checkout. The watch is available in both Black and Gold Brown color options.

If you’re looking for a brand new Gear 2, that will cost you around $299 from most online retailers, which is why this $120 price point is such a steal. It may not boast the best specs on the market, but this is still a great option for those looking to try out their first smartwatch.

If you’re interested in grabbing one for yourself, head to the deal link below. And remember, the Gear 2 only works with Samsung devices, so be sure to take that into consideration before buying.

‘Atomas’ is an addictive puzzle game with a dash of science [VIDEO]

Science is typically seen as one of those subjects that only “nerdy people” enjoy. That stereotype has started to change in the last few years. More and more people are realizing that science doesn’t have to be some old dudes in white lab coats. Science can be really fun, and games like Atomas drive that point home.

Atomas, by Sirnic, is a puzzle game that uses scientific elements. Your job is to create valuable elements such as gold, platinum, and silver. All you have to start with is a hydrogen atom, but in no time at all you’ll be creating bigger and better things. The good news is you don’t have to be physicist or chemist to understand this game. Anyone can pick it up in just a few seconds.

atomas screens

To play Atomas you have to combine matching elements. Every element has an atomic number, and when combined they create the element with the next higher atomic number. For example, when you combine two Lithium atoms (3) you’ll get one Beryllium (4). The goal is to get the element with the highest atomic number you can before the board gets too crowded.

Here’s how it works. A few random elements are arranged in a circle. At the center of that circle is another random element, or a (+) or (-) icon. You can tap anywhere in the circle to place the new element in that spot. The (+) icon can be placed between two matching elements to combine them, but you can combine more than just two at a time. If you create a symmetrical pattern of elements, and then place the (+) at the center you can combine multiples.

atomas

The (-) icon can be used to move an element into a different position, or transform it into a (+) icon. Once the circle is completely full of elements, and there is no room for new ones, the game is over. At your disposal is “antimatter” that can be used to clear half of the circle, but these are only available via an in-app purchase.

Along with the standard mode that I just described, there is Time Attack and Alchemist mode. In Time Attack, you are tasked with creating as big of an element as you can in the allotted time. Every time you combine elements you get a few more seconds. Alchemist mode is for serious players. You have to create all 118 existing elements, and a few new ones created by the developer.

Atomas is a really well designed and addictive game. You can log in with Google Play Games and compete with your friends to get the high score. If you don’t have time to finish a game you can easily stop and continue at a different time. We can’t help but feel like Atomas would have made high school science class much more enjoyable (and maybe there wouldn’t be so many science errors in this review). Download Atomas for free from the Play Store here.

Nanowires can be solution to power limitations in wearables

A research team at the famed MIT have developed a new use for flexible nanowires to create a better supercapacitor that should exceed the current graphene-based supercapacitor technology in performance. This new discovery could greatly enhance energy sources for the next generation of fitness trackers and wearable devices. Kinda neat new tech, really.

The key to understanding this new tech is to understand how supercapacitors are used in devices – they store and release electrical signals in short but intense bursts, and these are usually needed in brief transmissions of data within wearable devices and computers, even in smartphones. This new technology uses yarns made from nanowires of the element niobium as the electrodes for supercapacitors.

These new supercapacitors feature high volumetric power density – over two times as dense as the current carbon nanotube yarns. The new supercapacitors achieve high performance through high conductivity and high surface area, but are able to do so without metal backing. This translates to lots of saved space in next generation logic boards. As you can guess, space is not really a resource that you have a lot of in the small wearable devices. “If you’ve got an Apple Watch and I shave 30 percent off the mass, you may not even notice,” one of the researchers said. “But if you reduce the volume by 30 percent, that would be a big deal,” he says because consumers will notice the size of the device.

nanowire-supercapacitors-2@2x

The technology may even find translation in other types of wearable devices, especially as it can be woven into fabrics because the nanowires are highly flexible and are only 140 nanometers in diameter – translated to our language, that’s very small indeed.

Download now: Android M Developer Preview 2 OTAs for Nexus 5 and 6

Android M Easter Egg 1 Watermark

If you’re like me and absolutely want and need the latest updates, you might have already flashed Android M Developer Preview 2 onto your Nexus when it arrived last week. For those that were waiting for the OTA links, we have your back.

So far the only devices with captured OTAs are the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6:

Installing OTA updates manually is perfect for those that don’t want to wait for the OTA to hit their devices automatically and yet don’t want to bother with doing a clean install.

As for what’s new with Android M Developer Preview 2? We’ll be bringing you a post that better sums this up soon, but honestly don’t expect much different from the first preview in terms of major new features or revisions. In fact, unless you are actually a developer that needs the new version for testing out the (now more finished) M APIs, there’s not a lot here for you that makes it a “must have now” download.

So how about it, anyone flashed this yet? How do you feel about the latest preview so far?
