Safe Cracking With Signal Analysis

[Dave Jones] over at EEVblog got his hands on a small safe with an electronic lock and decided to try his hand at safe cracking. But rather than breaking out the thermal drill or shaped charge, he hooked up his Rigol scope and attempted a safe cracking via signal analysis (YouTube link).

We have to say that safes Down Under seem much stouter than most of the inexpensive lock boxes we’ve seen in the US, at least in terms of the quality (and quantity) of the steel in the body of the safe. Even though [Dave] was looking for a way in through the electronics, he still needed to deal with all that steel to get himself out of a face-palm moment that resulted in a lockout. Once that was out of the way, he proceeded to capture usable signals from the internal microcontroller using the only two available contacts – the 9 volt battery connections. While he did get signals, he couldn’t find any signatures that would help determine the six digits in the PIN, and as he points out, even if he did, brute-forcing through the one million permutations to find the right code would take too long, given the wrong-code lockout feature of the lock.

Even though he failed to hack into this particular safe, there’s still plenty to be learned from his methods. And who’s to say that other similar locks aren’t a little more chatty about their internals? Maybe you could even manage to EMP your way past the lock.

ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Hits Best Buy for $199, 64-Bit Intel Processor and “2K Display”

ASUS‘ shiny new ZenPad S 8.0 is available on Best Buy’s website this week, featuring a lovely price tag of just $199. With its 8″ QXGA display (1536 x 2048), this tablet is powered by an Intel Z3530 quad-core 64-bit processor and 2GB of RAM, with Android 5.0 “Lollipop” running on top.

On the backside of the tablet, there sits a 5MP camera, while a 2MP shooter decorates the frontside. Other specifications include 32GB of internal storage, microSD slot for expandable storage, and front-facing speakers. Naturally, ASUS has a custom skin running on top of Lollipop, giving off a TouchWiz vibe, at least to my eyes.

A cheaper version of the ZenPad is also available, priced at just $99. It features a 7″ display (1024 x 600), 16GB of storage, a slower Intel processor, and 1GB of RAM. But hey, it’s only $99.

Both of these devices are now available on Best Buy.

Is This the Back Cover for a New Motorola DROID Phone?

Ready to get a peek at one of the new Motorola phones, maybe even a new DROID? According to HelloMotoHK, a group who stays close to the Motorola beat, the photo below is of a new Motorola DROID phone. That of course, also means a new Verizon phone.

The phone part below is a shell or back plate of an unfinished or not-put-together phone, but we are seeing a design that looks like those leaked Moto G (3rd gen) renders from a couple of weeks back, along with a variety of other unconfirmed leaks. I think it’s safe to assume that Motorola is going with a design for 2015 that incorporates a vertical metal housing alongside its phones’ back plates that holds the camera, flash, and dimple.

This particular phone looks a lot like a combination of last year’s Moto X and a DROID Turbo. You can see a metal housing around the outside of the body, along with a covered branding at the bottom that looks a lot like where Motorola put the “DROID” logo on the Turbo (see top image for reference). The triangular design also sort of evokes that robotic or futuristic styling of the DROID brand.

No other details were provided with the image, but if you see something we missed, be sure to drop it in the comments below.

Otherwise, what do you think of the shape? Again, it looks a lot like the back of a Moto X, which has always been a joy to hold.

Google Releases MDL To Help You Give Your Website That Material Design Feel

MDL-ThumbRecently Google has unveiled Material Design Lite, a way to easily give your website that material look and feel. It comes with low overhead (only 27kb gzipped) and few dependencies. MDL is powered by CSS, HTML, and JavaScript.

Google designed MDL to adjust to a number of device form factors, so sites should scale up to PCs and down to smartphones in the responsive manner we have come to expect. It should also degrade gracefully when users view sites in older browsers.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 Active gets Find my Mobile fix in latest update

samsung galaxy s6 active official

The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is picking up a quick OTA update today. This one brings it from firmware OE9 to OF3, and the changelog isn’t very large.

The biggest change AT&T saw fit to mention was that Find My Mobile now works with Reactivation Mode, so you should be able to use the feature in the event that it gets factory reset. Other than that, there are probably some bugs that were squished which were either not important enough or too numerous to name.

It’s a relatively small download at 146MB, though you’ll probably still want to be on WiFi if your LTE connection isn’t squeaky clean. It’s also always a good idea to have a fairly charged battery.

AT&T notes that this is a mandatory update, and you can postpone installation up to 3 times for up to 8 hours. To grab it all you’ll need to do is head to Settings > About Device > Software Update > Check for Updates.

Rumored Sony Lavender will be known as Xperia T4 Ultra at launch

The Sony Lavender leaked ahead of launch but it’s not yet formally released by the Japanese tech giant. We’ve got new information that this model will now be known as the Xperia T4 Ultra (E5503) as an obvious follow up to the Xperia T3. This Sony Xperia T4 Ultra can be considered as a phablet because of its size but it’s expected to impress us more with its bezel-free design.

So far, we know this Sony Lavender aka the Xperia T4 Ultra will boast of a 5.5-inch full HD display, 1.7 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6752 chipset, 2GB RAM, 13MP main camera, dual-SIM support, 4G/LTE connectivity, and Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. Since the past Xperia T phones are considered mid-range, we can expect this T4 to be priced somewhere between $280 and $300.

We’re excited to know if this Xperia T4 will really sport a bezel-free design because if it does, this will be the first bezel-free device from Sony. We’re not sure if the phone will be indeed purple or lavender but the color is not our concern right now. I’m more interested in the possibility that it will be bezel-free.

Not many phones feature this design yet so Sony still has an advantage in the market. Just like the Sony Xperia T3, we’re expecting the T4 will be just as stylish, functional, and affordable. I guess we just have to wait and see.

ZTE sells 26M smartphones in H1 2015, still eyes top-3 handset spot in the US

zte-logo-1

Chinese smartphone maker ZTE has been on the up and up as of late, especially when taking into account the last two years of its smartphone business. Back in March, the company announced a 94-percent increase in its net profit in 2014, along with an increase in worldwide smartphone shipments by more than 50 percent that same year. Now company officials have released some numbers for the first half of 2015, giving us a good look at how ZTE is fairing in the handset market.

ZTE has just reported that it shipped 26 million smartphones worldwide in the first half of the year, roughly 39 percent of those being high-end devices. Total shipments of smartphones, tablets and smart home products totaled around 46 million. The company has of course been focusing on international markets such as the U.S., and it looks like its hard work has paid off – ZTE has announced a 41-percent increase in its United States smartphone shipments in H1 of this year.

As it stands, ZTE plans to sell roughly 60 million units worldwide throughout the entire year, though it may run in to some stiff competition as we make the jump from H1 to H2. New flagships from popular OEMs like Xiaomi, Huawei and Meizu are expected to launch within the next few months, potentially making it difficult for ZTE to sell as many units as it originally forecasted.

ZTE’s big plans for the U.S. might not be as attainable as it once thought

In March, the Chinese device maker announced its goal to make it into the top three U.S. smartphone vendors by the year 2017. From a numbers standpoint, this is entirely possible. The company has seen major growth in its smartphone business over the past two years, and it already holds the fourth place spot in North America, behind Apple, Samsung and LG. But as time goes on ZTE is now realizing this goal may not be as attainable as it once thought. The new target date to become a top-three device seller in the U.S. has just been pushed back to 2020. In addition to the U.S.-based achievement, it also plans to become the number one Chinese brand in overseas markets by the same year.

ZTE has been making a push into the United States over the years, and we’ve already seen some fruits of its labor. Not only is the company relying on high-end smartphone sales in the U.S., it’s also going through an aggressive branding push that will hopefully court more users away from manufacturers like Apple and Samsung. Although ZTE hasn’t confirmed this information, we know that the company is behind the mysterious Axon Phone that’s set to launch in the U.S. on July 14th. This device will undoubtedly face some challenges when it launches, but maybe that’s all part of the plan to increase brand awareness.

ZTE has some big ambitions for the next few years, and that’s exactly what it has to do in order to move up the ranks.

Samsung patents new technology to measure your body fat with a mobile device

Samsung-Logo-Wordmark-RGB

Samsung just got granted yet another patent. The initial filing was made in March, 2014 and credits four inventors living in Korea. It seems like the company is trying hard to come with new innovations for its upcoming technologies. This one is all about improving your health.

Apparently the company wants you to know more about yourself. I’m talking about your body fat. That’s right, Samsung developed a new sensor that measures your body fat using different sensors inside the screen cover of a mobile phone case. In order to take a reading users must grip the sensors with their hands.  If Samsung could pull this off it would make another fitness data point that can be captured by mobile devices. If this is proven to be accurate, it could eventually save you a trip to the doctor which could ultimately save you a good chunk of money.

The technology is still in early stages so don’t get your hopes up.  We may not see this come to the market for quite some time, if it even passes testing. Gimmick or not, this could actually prove to be useful in the future.

Android gets nearly 5,000 new strains of malware per day

Analytics firm G DATA has new data about malware in Android. It reports that it has identified 440,267 new samples of malware just in the first quarter of this year. That’s nearly 4,900 a day, or one sample every 18 seconds  In comparison to Q4 2014, which had 413,287 new strains, that is a 6.4 percent increase. This number represents a 21 percent increase when compared to Q1 2014’s 363,153.

Although the numbers might be surprising, the reality is, its not. Android’s global market share stands at 61 percent, according to the report, and hackers realize there is a lot of potential profit that can be made from users. 50.3 percent of the malware targeting this platform, like Trojans, ransomware, and SMS Trojans, is tied to this.

From that perspective, it is understandable why there is such a vast selection of anti-virus and anti-malware apps on Google Play. These solutions are becoming more necessary by the day. Think about it this way: in 2011, there were 3,809 new malware samples found on Android for the entire year. This skyrocketed to 214,327 the next and 1,192,035 and 1,548,129 in the following two years respectively.

No matter how much common sense or knowledge a person has about staying safe, he or she should assume that the worst can happen at any time when it comes to online data and information. Mistakes may happen, and that’s fine as long as we come to that realization and prepare for them.

As a precaution, it’s a good idea to read reviews of some of the security apps on Google Play and choose an option, if you have not yet done so. If you need help with a solution, personally, I’d like to recommend Cheetah Mobile’s CM Security, which I’ve been using for over six months. It has the expected virus scanner and real-time protection. In addition, it can delete junk and temporary files,  lock apps and settings with a pincode or pattern code, find a lost device once enabled, and take a photo of someone trying unsuccessfully to access the device or an app or setting that has been locked.
