If you have been on the fence about whether or not to purchase Google’s latest tablet, the Nexus 9, Best Buy may have made your decision a little easier. For the next two days, the blue box store is discounting the price of the 16GB model by $75, bringing the price down to a more reasonable $325. The verdict is still out among Android Police staff on whether or not this is a great tablet, but a lower price might make up for some of its warts.

Play Store 5.4.10 Makes The Notification Bar Transparent On App Pages [APK Download]

PlayStore-Thumb The Play Store is where you go to watch your other apps get updated, but occasionally it’s nice to sit back and watch as the store gets its own renovation. Sometimes the changes are stark. Otherwise, there’s just a few new lights here or there.

What’s New?

In version 5.4.10, it’s not about what’s been added, but what’s been taken away. The notification bar has lost its color. Now Play Store pages appear with banner images that reach towards the top of the screen.

This New Smart Car Swaps The Infotainment System For A Center-Mounted Phone Dock And A Bluetooth Connection

16_2016

Have you ever looked at your low-tech car audio system and wished your head unit could just be as smart as the phone in your pocket? Or maybe you have one of those fancy infotainment systems, whose software tends to make the HTC G1 look futuristic by comparison. Well, an automaker finally decided to acknowledge that it’s easier to use the hardware that the customer already has than build something newer and more expensive that won’t do any better.

Some Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge units are shipping with tiny surface scratches all over the display

samsung galaxy s6 edge scratches defect 2

When manufacturers churn out hundreds of thousands of devices in order to meet demand, occasionally a bad egg or two makes it past quality control. It’s not uncommon to have one, maybe even a few defective devices slip out when your phone is as popular as say, the Samsung Galaxy S6. So it’s not too surprising to find that some brand new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge customers have discovered some oddities with their shiny new devices, fresh out of the box.

It’s not #bendgate (thankfully), but as highlighted by XDA Developers , a handful of forum members have discovered what appears to be tiny scratches all over their “new” Galaxy S6 displays. It’s a pattern not too unlike the swirl marks you might find on your car’s clear coat. It’s not clear how they got there, or how wide spread the issue is at the moment, but it’s definitely something you wouldn’t expect to find when unwrapping a $700+ piece of tech. The uploader also makes mention of dead pixels being present when the display is turned on.

Keep in mind out-of-the-box defects like this aren’t unique the Galaxy S6. Even the folks at iFixit found a scratched display on their freshly unwrapped HTC One M9 (complete with a dead pixel). Like any out-of-the-box defects, issues like this should be taken up with the retailer from whence it came, which happens to be T-Mobile who began shipping out the Samsung Galaxy S6 ahead of its April 10th launch date. There was a report of an international model also arriving in this same condition, but that could be more isolated.

In any case, now would be a good time to check your device out under a lamp or direct sunlight. Anyone find something similar on their Samsung Galaxy S6 unit?

Evernote 7 Arrives For Android Tablets

In mid-March, Evernote got a nice update to version 7.0 with a more “material” look and feel, a new navigation drawer, revised FAB, custom quick notes, and a few other goodies. At the time though, the overhaul was only pushed out to phones (with Evernote maintaining the mysterious “varies with device” version status in the Play Store).

As of yesterday, Evernote says 7.0 is going out to Android tablets as well.

Google Play Store 5.4 brings more immersive listings for Lollipop users, rolling out today

Google Play Store 5.4 update hero images resized

It feels like it wasn’t too long ago that the Google Play Store added those fancy colored status bars. It wasn’t that big a deal, just something that was introduced in KitKat. Today, Googler Kirill Grouchnikov is revealing some new changes making their way onto Google Play starting today, but it’s only for users running Lollipop.

Google Play Store listing evolution

Evolution of the Google Play Store’s listings page

Once again, it’s not a big change, just a little something Android fans will get a kick out of. The Play Store now features transparent status bar when viewing listings, going full-on immersive in the latest update (Google Play 5.4). With the hero images for listings slowly inching higher up on your phone’s display, more content can be displayed below without scrolling. And that’s pretty neat.

Mailbox gets a fresh coat of Material Design in latest update

mailbox

Another popular app is getting a fresh coat of Material Design. This time it’s the Dropbox-owned email app, Mailbox. If you’ve never used Mailbox it’s the app that started the craze of snoozing emails. Many apps have adopted that feature, but Mailbox was one of the first to implement it, long before Google Inbox came around.

With this update you can expect the normal smattering of Material goodies. A new floating action button allows you to create new emails, the slide-out drawer is cleaner, and the Search button has been moved to the top bar. Mailbox is a really nice email app if you’re someone who struggles to get to “inbox zero.” It treats emails more like a to-do list, which forces you to take action or archive. Not everyone will like that approach, but it’s free and worth a shot.

What email app do you use on your phone?

android-studio

When Android Studio v1.1 entered the Stable channel, about 6 weeks ago, the Dev Tools team gave word that v1.2 was already well underway and that it would be based on the newly released IntelliJ 14. A couple of weeks later, the first preview build turned up, and it had already been upgraded to include IntelliJ 14.1, as well. Developers on the Canary channel have been testing and playing with the new features since early March, and now it’s time to bring the goods to a larger audience.
