Baubax jacket can solve your travel woes in 15 different ways

Did you hear about that boy band singer who collapsed during his flight from heat exhaustion because he wore 12 layers of clothes just to avoid buying excess baggage fees? Well there’s no cure for stupidity yet, but a new Kickstarter project is looking to bring you a slight solution to storage and other things when you’re traveling and it’s not luggage. Meet the Baubax jacket, which says it is the world’s best travel jacket as it has 15 different functions.

For the more usual travel needs, it has a built-in inflatable neck pillow with a 2-second inflation. It also has an eye mask, gloves, a pocket to carry the Baubax blanket (sold separately), sunglass pocket, passport pocket, detachable pillow, and detachable hood (for some models). Oh, and it also has a koozie drink pocket for when you need to warm or keep drinks cool and keep your hands free at the same time.

For the more tech-related functions, the jacket has earphone holders to help keep your earphones untangled and easy to access. It also has a pocket that can hold a tablet, so you free up space in your carry-on. Of course there is a smartphone pocket as well, and a microfiber cloth in order to clean your devices’ screens. The zipper of your jacket is pretty ingenious as well, as it is also a 1 inch pen that can extend to 4 inches, and the bottom can be used as a stylus.

The jacket is available in four styles, for men and for women: sweatshirt, windbreaker, bomber, and blazer. It is also available in various colors: pink, blue, and grey for women, and charcoal, blue, and black for men. It has more than met its goal of $20,000, with 52 days to go to get more backers. The lowest you can now pledge to get a jacket is $99, for the sweatshirt style.

This is a crowdfunded project, and as such may not deliver what its creators initially promise. Most crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, have policies about what happens to your money if the project fails to deliver on its goals, but choosing to back a project is inevitably a risk. Android Community’s reporting on crowdfunded projects should in no way be seen as an endorsement, unless specifically stated, and we recommend closely examining the terms and conditions to understand your individual rights as a backer before making a pledge.

Be ready for Amazon Prime Day – it will be bigger than Black Friday!

prime-day-july-15

Amazon is celebrating its 20th birthday this Wednesday, July 15th. The plan is to commemorate it with an explosion of deals the retailer claims will surpass those we typically see on Black Friday, the biggest shopping phenomenon in the USA. The special event is being referred to as Amazon Prime Day and it has the whole online shopping community going nuts; but there is one major caveat.

Amazon Prime Day is not for everyone. As its name entails, these seemingly spectacular offers will only be accessible to Amazon Prime subscribers. Those who want to take advantage of this exclusive sale will have to sign up for the $99/year service, which is a great deal if you consider it also grants access to free 2-day Prime shipping, Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming, access to Kindle books, unlimited Amazon Prime Photos cloud storage and more.

Signing up will still be a bit of a hassle for those who lack a Prime subscription, but there are some great ways to access Amazon Prime Day discounts without fully taking the plunge into the Amazon shopping ecosystem. The king of internet retailers does offer free trials to first-time users, and they plan to leverage these in order to possibly get more Prime customers in the future.

Want in on these great deals? You could test the service and enjoy them without paying a dime (at least until the trial period ends). Let’s show you how it’s done.

Start your 1-month Amazon Prime free trial

New users will have it easy once Amazon Prime day comes around. Everyone gets a 1-month free trial to Amazon Prime! All you have to do is head over to the Amazon Prime Free Trial page, click on “Start my free trial” and follow the on-screen instruction.

Sign up for Amazon Prime free 1-month trial

Users will be Prime members for a month and will be charged the subscription fee if they don’t cancel before the trial period is over. By the way, you can only sign up for this testing phase once. If you have used up your Amazon Prime free trial in the past, you will need to fork out the $99 this time around.

Are you a student?

If you are a student, you are in for a real nice treat. Amazon gives active students a 6-month free trial to Amazon Prime. To top it off, they also get a 50% discount after the trial period is over. You will need an .edu email address, but you should have no trouble obtaining one if you are part of any college or university.

Time to shop!

One of the main attractions at any shopping event is obviously the electronics deals. We are sure there will be plenty of Android and mobile-related goodies to buy at a discount, so be certain we will be all over these deals once we learn more details.

Make sure you are ready to get your free trial if you can, as July 15th is only a couple days away. If you no longer can, it will mean you have tested this service in the past and probably know how awesome Amazon Prime really is. It’s worth the $99 if you shop and use Amazon’s services constantly.

Slacker Radio Updated With Android Auto Support In The Latest Version

imageTake a moment to consider the plight of poor app developers. In order to evade the fury of Android users, they need to check their apps every few months to make sure they work with incremental updates. Then every once in a while they need to add support for new phones with weird manufacturer skins or new chipset architectures. And if that wasn’t enough, Google keeps adding entirely new product categories – Android Wear on smartwatches, Android TV for televisions, and Android Auto for cars.

Pebble Time Steel will begin shipping to backers by end of July

pebble time steel

Pebble’s all new color smartwatch for 2015, the Pebble Time, has already begun shipping to backers (we received ours and love it) and more recently, became available for pre-order. With that, the folks at Pebble have began shifting focus to the Pebble Time Steel, the metal clad and more expensive version of the smartwatch.

The Pebble Time’s Kickstarter page was recently updated, letting Time Steel backers know that production is planned for this week, with shipping set to begin at the end of the month. Of course, shipping these units will take some time, but Pebble says you can expect to at the very least, receive a shipping tracking number by the end of August at the latest. They also mentioned that because of the limited availability, expect separate shipping for the metal band which may not arrive together with the Time Steel (don’t worry, it will still include the leather band).

Don’t worry if you didn’t pick the metal band option. According to Pebble, once the Time Steel officially becomes available for everyone, the metal bands will be sold separately so you’ll have another chance then.

[Update: Nexus 9] Android M Developer Preview 2 Nexus OTA ZIP Roundup

nexus2cee_android-m_thumb.pngThe Android L developer preview remained largely static in the time between its launch and Lollipop’s official release. That isn’t the case with Android M, which Google says will receive monthly over-the-air updates. The first of them is now available for the Nexus 5 and 6.

There isn’t much new to see in this update. Google announced it last week when it released system images, and you can see the provided list of changes in our coverage at the time.

Fleksy launches theme design contest for users

Fleksy has been doing a good job in keeping users engaged through various features and offers that they’ve been launching the past few months. The virtual keyboard market, while small, is incredibly competitive, and so you’d need all the marketing leverage to get a leg up on your peers. The latest thing that Fleksy has done is to launch a theme design contest so designers and users can experiment with the look of the app and get the chance to actually have it published.

If you haven’t been satisfied with the keyboard themes that Fleksy is offering, then you now have a chance to tell them what you think would look really cool. Once all the entries are already in, Fleksy will then choose their 15 favorite designs and post them online, giving users now the chance to vote for what they think is the most “fleksellent” of the submitted designs. The five most popular themes will then be added to the theme store and actually be downloaded by Fleksy users.

The virtual keyboard has recently announced that they will be free forever, meaning users from all platforms will be able to download and use it without purchasing anything. They’ve also added a Highlights feature, where the most popular GIFs, stickers and other rich content can be found when you click the auto-recommend hashtag.

While the app is free itself, it still has an app store where you can purchase extra features and themes. No word though if the winning themes will be free or will cost us a tiny bit to have. Deadline for submission of entries is July 17, 5PM PST.

Inbox by Gmail prompts you to create a reminder when you try to email yourself

Google_INbox_App_Large_Icon

Google’s Inbox by Gmail apparently has a new feature: when you go to email yourself an important thought or task, the app will attempt to get you to create an actual reminder over sending yourself an email.

The prompt appears right after typing your email address in the “To” field. If you tap on the prompt, any text you’ve added in the subject and body of the email will be quickly transferred over to the reminder, and all you have to do is tap “Save.”

While it’s nothing ground breaking, it’s a cool little feature, and it makes a lot of sense, as Inbox already has some neat integration with reminders. However, it’d be nice to see Google go even further with this feature and offer it in Gmail itself.
