Twitch app for Android gains a convenient pop-out player in most recent update

twitch_logo_purple

Watching other people play video games may not sound too amusing to everyone out there, but the craze has recently picked up steam all throughout the world. If you happen to use popular game streaming service Twitch on your Android device, you’ll be happy to hear that a neat little update is headed your way.

The Twitch team has just announced a new pop-up player feature that will allow you to keep broadcasts streaming, even when you’re outside of the application. To access the new feature simply tap the pop-out icon located on the bottom right corner of the video player, or you can get to it via the Settings cog. When you’re in pop-out mode, you can change the size of the player with your finger. Tapping the pop-in icon on the left of the player should return you to the full app and resume the original broadcast without missing a beat. It should be noted that this new feature only works in landscape mode on smartphones; the feature will work in both landscape and portrait modes if you’re on a tablet.

While I have you here, did you happen to know that Android Authority has a Twitch account? Our very own Joe Hindy has been streaming a ton of games as of late, including popular titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Hitman Sniper, Siegefall, Kingdom Rush: Origins and many, many more. Our broadcasts normally last anywhere around 30-60 minutes at a time, which makes it easy to watch each one in a single sitting.

Be sure to follow Android Authority on Twitch to get a first-hand look at the most recent and popular mobile games on the market. To do so, head to the link below to become a follower. Also, the update to the Twitch mobile app should be live in the Play Store, so be sure to check out that link as well.

Update To Instant Contact Card

We received a ton of great responses from the community regarding our contact card proposal, so we wanted to share with you a few additional contact card options based on your feedback. The initial contact card proposal was designed to optimize for the majority of users who do not have contact photos or high resolution contact photos. The secondary goal was to create a UX affordance that allows up to 5 options on the card while making those options easily reachable. After much discussion, we identified support for hi-res images as a third goal.

Due to the complexity of supporting multiple layouts, as well as consistency between low res and hi res cards, we would like to only support one layout for contact cards. We also want to preserve the original photo. We listened to your feedback and put together the additional options below.

Option 1: This is the originally proposed contact card. This is still our preferred option as it meets all of our goals mentioned above but does not support hi res photos well.

Option 2: The background photo is no longer blurred, which introduces contrast issues when text is applied on top of the photo. This is a good middle ground to show the high res photo.  This would be our second choice.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Option 3: The photo is sized to expand to the top of the screen. This will cause low res photos to appear pixelated. There is also excessive space when there is no photo, which will be the most common case.

Option 4: The photo does not inherit the contact color. The same issues from previous options apply to this option a well.

 Community-Feedback

We would love to hear your thoughts, so feel free to contact the design team at design@cyngn.com.

It’s the best time ever to be in the market for an unlocked phone. The Alcatel Idol 3 is one of the reasons why.

If you’re thinking of buying a new Android smartphone, 2015 is shaping up to be great. We’re seeing unlocked phones that deliver an excellent Android experience from plenty of vendors, and some — like the Alcatel Idol 3 — are doing it at a price-point that won’t break your budget.

The hardest part about buying a great unlocked Android phone is deciding which one to choose. That’s a very good situation to be in from a consumer standpoint. And something we can help you with. I’ve put away the expensive phones over the past month and am using these budget-friendly unlocked phones full-time. The Alcatel Idol 3 is one I can heartily recommend, and here’s a few reasons why.

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides gain a few handy editing features in latest update

Google Sheets

Google has just announced that new updates are rolling out to its Docs, Sheets and Slides apps that will make it a breeze to edit documents of all types on mobile.

The company is making it easier for users to edit document titles from the overflow menu in each app, which will make this process much quicker and convenient. You’ll now also be able to change the layout of a slide to a predefined layout in the Slides app, as well as reply to comments when using Office Compatibility Mode in Docs.

Here’s the full changelog for these three apps, from Google:

  • People can now edit document, spreadsheet, and presentation titles directly from the overflow menu in the top right corner of each app, making renaming files faster and simpler.
  • Within the Slides app, individuals can now change the layout of an existing slide to one of several predefined layouts, allowing them to update presentations on mobile more effectively.
  • People can now reply to comments when working in Office Compatibility Mode in the Docs app. In addition, when in OCM, suggestions and comments now appear in the Comments panel in the order they were made—rather than as all comments first and all suggestions second.

The updates to these three apps are now rolling out in Google Play, so follow the links below to grab the latest versions.

Here is Another Report Claiming That Huawei is Making a Nexus Phone

Back in March, we first heard a rumor that Huawei was making the next Nexus smartphone (or at least one of them). We leaned towards believing it at the time, because a source of ours gave us the equivalent of a virtual wink when asked about it. Since that initial report, we have seen at least three others, all claiming to have heard similar stories.

In case you needed another, take yesterday’s report from The Information’s Amir Efrati as the fifth in the past four months to suggest that Google and Huawei are holding hands in Nexus land. Efrati has a solid track record when it comes to Google-related inside info, so I wouldn’t take this latest report lightly.

If you were looking for juicy new details, though, you won’t find them here. This new report simply mentions that Huawei will become the “first mainland China” manufacturer to get Nexus making duties.

So, yeah, Huawei Nexus! (Again.)

Now You Can Send Directions From Desktop Google Maps To Your Android Device

nexus2cee_Maps.pngIt can be convenient to pull up directions at a PC while you’re sitting at your desk, but you’re not going to lug that thing outside to the car when it’s time to hit the road. That means you have to get the directions to your phone or tablet, which often means just searching a second time. Back in April, Google tried to alleviate this issue by introducing the ability to send directions directly from Search.
