In Baum’s 1904 novel ‘The Marvelous Land of Oz,’ the child known as Tip is revealed to be Princess Ozma, transformed into a boy by the witch Mombi. The moment she is restored to her true form remains one of the earliest examples of magical gender transformation in children’s literature, and it reshaped the political future of Oz.
