Wizard of Oz Fact #87: Judy Garland Had to Wear a Painful Corset

To make Judy Garland appear younger and more childlike, the costume department fitted her with a tight corset that flattened her curves and altered her posture. Garland was 16 during filming, but MGM wanted Dorothy to look closer to 12. The restrictive garment made long shooting days uncomfortable, but Garland’s performance remained warm and natural.
