Wizard of Oz Fact #1 — The Ruby Slippers Were Originally Silver

In L. Frank Baum’s original 1900 novel, Dorothy’s magical shoes were silver rather than ruby. When MGM adapted the story for film, the production team changed the color to ruby red to take advantage of the vibrant new Technicolor process. The sparkling red shoes created a striking visual contrast against the Yellow Brick Road, helping them become one of the most iconic props in movie history.
