Although Dorothy’s gingham dress appears blue and white on screen, the actual costume was a muted blue and light pink. Early Technicolor cameras struggled with bright whites, which could flare or distort on film. The costume department used pale pink instead, knowing the camera would translate it into the crisp white audiences expected.
